Brecken and Camryn's story is an emotional roller coaster. It's pretty obvious from the synopsis that this book is full of angst and I think I lost count how many times I cried.

Although it's a bit predictable, the strength of the characters and their love story made this book feel fresh and fast paced. My heart broke over and over for the main characters for all they lost and all they have to overcome to having a prayer at an HEA.

The story isn't actually quite as dark as I thought it might be though there are some parts that hard to read regarding torture and domestic violence. I thought the author did a very realistic portrayal of what many women go through and are willing to put up with because they don't know another way. And for all those judgy people out there who think this isn't real, you are WRONG! Domestic violence is a huge problem and though Camryn is fictional, I applaud the strength she finally has later in the book. Yes, her character was frustrating but again, it was worth the read to see her growth.

Brecken is pretty amazing, just like all of Nicole's men. This is probably tied for my favorite stand alone from Nicole and he is most of that reason. His strength, his fierce love, his stubbornness... he's a beautiful character.

I'm a sucker for young love/second chance romance and this book will definitely give you all the feels! Highly recommended.

1.5 Stars

I really wanted to like this book. I am ok with the cheating that was obviously coming (there is a warning from the author on this as well) and was interested in the intensity of the relationship with Camryn and Brecken.

Unfortunately, that intensity fell flat for me and I really didn't feel the connection or any of the angst. I was left feeling that the author didn't really know where to go with the book, and that a lot of the "revelations" were obvious and that there was nothing really compelling to move the story forward.

The relationship was Brecken and Camryn just didn't have the intensity it should have. He moves in next door, her husband is a jerk...but then, the circumstances of the situation remove the husband from the picture. For me, at least, he was already removed when you found out about their history and his actions.

I think I wanted more push and pull, maybe a little more angst. If I am going to read a book where there is an affair, I want there to be a compelling reason to cheat on the marriage...and for this one, there was not a marriage really at all.

There was also an issue with the plot development. There is a revelation about Camryn's son...that happens twice. And the same characters are surprised. Both times. If this second time hadn't happened at the end of the book, I am not sure I would have finished the title.

I know I am in the minority, as this seems to be a book that a lot of people have really enjoyed, but it left me wanting more.

I am not able to recommend this title.
This was one of the best books I’ve read. It was amazing, heartbreaking, and beautiful all at the same time. This book will make you feel all the emotions possible.

My heart broke for Camryn and Brecken. These two beautiful characters were each tortured for years and the fact that they can see beauty after everything was so amazing. There was a moment that I just wanted to cry my eyes out for Camryn. She made the ultimate sacrifice to ensure her son was safe with her. She did what she felt was right and she was absolutely the strongest female heroine I have ever read in a book.

Brecken was obviously so strong in his own right. The things this man went through is the things nightmares are made of. And the only thing that kept him alive was the thought of coming home one day to Camryn. Then when he is able to come home, she isn’t his to have anymore. But he suffered for six years in captivity, he would gladly suffer a few more to know that one day they could be together again.

Will Camryn be able to escape the clutches of her horrendous husband? Will Brecken be able to find peace after the war he suffered? And most importantly, will they both make it out alive? One click this amazing book now and find out.
Tortured is an angsty, but sweet, love story about Brecken, a POW survivor, and his childhood sweetheart Camryn. They swore to love each other forever but he died… leaving her anguished and alone. When he comes back to life years later (is rescued from the POW camp) Camryn has to make some serious decisions about her current life.

The description of this book on the sales page had me excitedly downloading this one. It ended up being a pretty enjoyable read… but it wasn’t enough like the description that I was really satisfied. I wanted to see more “determination” from Brecken to get his love back. And I wanted to see more “going against the warden of Camryn’s personal prison.” (Did this ever even happen?)

Even though it was implied in the back cover description that this was the case… I found myself frustrated that Camryn was totally content to just go with the flow, even though the love of her life is a mere thirty feet away and her life is in danger. As in, rescue and safety are RIGHT THERE but you refuse it. And Brecken was content enough as well and not because he’s been broken from war, but because he’s trying to do the “right thing” I guess.

Their reasons for resisting each other just weren’t strong enough. I wasn’t convinced! The big reveal/climax of the book had the potential to be a huge moment but it felt a little disappointing (and was nearly word for word out of one of my favorite movies, haha). I really loved parts of this book but overall it just wasn’t for me. Admittedly I like romance novels that are a bit more aggressive and this one was on the sweeter side of contemporary. I think that would really work for some readers, just not for me.

This was a nice read and well-written. Highly recommended for readers of romance who love second chance romance, childhood sweetheart romance, ex-soldier romance, and tortured hero/heroine love stories.
