From the moment I picked up this book, it kept me enthralled. I lost sleep because I couldn't put it down!Lisa is a daycare provider who decides to spend her weekend off alone while her husband and son go on a fishing trip. But things don't go as planned and she finds herself as a hostage with a deranged man and three accomplices...and 10 kids. Lisa fights for herself and the kids as she tries to keep these men from killing her.
There were a few editing errors, but nothing that distracted me from the storyline. From beginning to end, the author did an amazing job at keeping me wanting to know what happened next. Don't start this book if you don't have ample time to read!! Excellent!

I have read books with varying similar story lines; however, this was a quick and engaging read that I finished in one sitting. It was not quite a 4 for me, but it was more than a 3 - so I rounded up.
It was nice to read one of these with just average people as the heroes. This seemed fairly believable. The only thing I thought was a little too pat was that the adults were all in complete agreement the whole time, there was none of the division that is typical in extreme situations. I suppose it could be because they had a common goal of prioritizing the children.
Lisa was amazing, I think that when you read this you will hope to have just a fraction of the courage she had in dealing with her captors, and the front she put on for the children. I found her to be very likeable. You do not get a ton of her back story, but I think this is about how she evolves from the quiet shy person no one would expect this from.
Murphy's law played a part in this, and that too seemed believable. I enjoyed this book and think you should give it a try. I think this author will only improve in time, and I will add to my to be watched shelf. I got this book when it was on free list, and I would be ok paying up to 3.49 or so for it based on length.
Again, great that it was not a Super Cop or Super Woman where she was secretly a kung fu expert that could take down Bruce Lee in her spare time. It really reminded me of you hearing something about an acquaintance and they lived through this horrific thing, and you wondered why them. This book does great displaying on how random that can be.
Daycare owner, Lisa, wakes up in her bed to discover that she's been the victim of a home invasion the night before, and the four men who attacked her are still downstairs - along with a dozen children and the parents who unwittingly delivered themselves into the hands of the thugs as they tried to drop off their little darlings to Lisa.
I read that "This Time You Lose" was named a finalist in the TNBW Strongest Start Novel Competition and I say, "Well earned," but after the story cycled through a number of failed escape attempts by the indestructible heroine, resulting in inevitable violent retaliation at the hands of Tito, the super mean ringleader, I found myself getting a little antsy.
Don't get me wrong. I was rooting for Lisa the whole way, and the plot was believable, but maybe too believable. It seems that in the interest of conveying the most horrific and realistic hostage situation possible, Stralyn gives us few surprises. I would have liked to see more character development, plot twists, and mind games to make the story more of a psychological thriller. I found myself wishing for a really interesting subplot to emerge, like an illicit affair between Lisa and one of the parents trapped in the house with her, or anything to break up the escape suspense.
In the absence of a subplot, Stralyn made the right decision to keep the book short. That said, I'd read it again if the author decided to expand the book and add the aforementioned elements in a future edition. It was pretty well written on a 5.5 grade reading level according to [...] so it's a quick read, accessible to the average reader.
I gave this book 3 1/2 stars and rounded up to 4 on Stralyn's potential. I'd be interested to follow the growth of this author.
"This Time You Lose" by Chris Stralyn is one of the best thrillers I've read in a long time, both in concept and in plot. Imagine you spend a night living out your worst nightmare when four men invade your home, do the unthinkable to you, and have no plans to leave. Then imagine you wake up the next morning to find that the situation has actually gotten worse.
That's what happened to Lisa when her husband and son go out of town. She wakes up after a night of torture to find that the four men are still there, in the home where she runs her daycare center, and they've made hostages out of the children and their parents. These drugged out criminals don't care what they have to do or who gets hurt, they just want ransom money. Lisa woke up a bloody, battered mess, then she and the four parents have their hands tied behind their backs, helpless as Tito, the ringleader, brandishes a gun in their faces and drags children around by their hair. He's promised to shoot the kids if any of adults try anything, and they all know he means it.
The hostages get even worse treatment when police surround the house.
OMG, what would you do in that situation? Faced with the impossible while desperately trying to keep the children she loves safe, will Lisa find a way to get everyone out, or die along with them? You'll HAVE to read the book to find out.
"This Time You Lose" (2011) by Chris Stralyn is an engaging thriller about four criminals who break into the home of a daycare provider and hold several parents and children hostage. The primary focus of the story is the struggle between Tito, the violent, psychopathic leader of the criminals and Lisa, the daycare provider. Tense and violent but not gratuitously so, the novel expands the definition of heroism. No reason the author couldn’t have included some nonwhite characters, so it gets four stars rather than five. Still, solidly recommended.
